Hurricanes sign Pierre-Olivier Joseph to one-year contract

The deal will carry a cap hit of $850,000.

Joseph, 27, spent last season with the Vancouver Canucks, where he had a goal and five assists for six points in 31 games while averaging just over 13 minutes of ice time. He spent some time on injured reserve due to a groin injury in October, but was also a frequent healthy scratch.

The Laval, Quebec native was initially selected 23rd overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Before making his debut as a professional, the Coyotes trade Joseph to the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the deal that sent forward Phil Kessel to Arizona.

Joseph played all of the 2019-20 season with Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, in which he notched three goals and 14 assists for 17 points in 52 games.

He made his NHL debut in the 2020-21 season, registering a goals and four assists for five points in 16 games for the Penguins.

Joseph continued to split time between the NHL and AHL until the 2022-23 season, which he played completely with the Penguins. That year, he put up five goals and 16 assists for 21 points in 75 games while averaging just over 15 minutes of ice time.

Following the 2023-24 season with Pittsburgh, in which he had two goals and nine assists for 11 points in 52 games, Joseph signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues as an unrestricted free agent. After just 23 games with the Blues in 2024-25, in which he had no goals and two assists, Joseph was dealt back to Pittsburgh for future considerations. He finished that season with no goals and one assist in 24 games with the Penguins before signing with the Canucks as a free agent.

Joseph is the brother of Edmonton Oilers forward Mathieu Joseph.
