Husso Sets Franchise Record in GR

Ville Husso is the second Detroit Red Wings goalie to post a shutout this season. The difference is, he hung up his zero for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Making his debut for Detroit’s farm club following his demotion earlier this week, Husso turned aside 22 shots in leading the Griffins to a 1-0 victory over the Manitoba Moose on Friday. In doing so, the netminder who was the opening-night starter for the Red Wings was making Grand Rapids franchise history.

Husso became the first goalie to record a shutout in each of his first two Griffins appearances. He posted a 25-save win last season on Jan. 26, 2024 while on a rehab assignment from the Red Wings.

It was also the 10th time in Griffins history that a Grand Rapids goalie recorded shutouts in consecutive appearances. The previous time was coming in February 2018. Jared Coreau was the goalie posting the consecutive shutouts on that occasion.

The Griffins posted their second shutout in three games to begin the campaign. This marked the first time in franchise history that the Griffins posted shutouts in their first two home games. It was 2021 Red Wings first-round draft pick Sebastian Cossa who put up the prior goose egg on the scoreboard. Together, Cossa and Husso combined to make 57 saves in their shutout victories.

Husso Not Done In Detroit

It was Cam Talbot who would post a 3-0 shutout win over Nashville in Detroit’s second game this season. Husso was the starter in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He got the hook in the second period after allowing four goals on 14 shots.

“Just a bad second period for all of us, and he’s the one that gets pulled,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said of that opening-night 6-3 setback. “It’s not fair to him. When a goalie gets pulled, it’s not usually just him. It’s a full lineup that needs to be accountable as well.”

Needing a roster spot due to injuries in Detroit, the Red Wings put Husso on waivers earlier this week. Upon clearing, he was given assignment to Grand Rapids.

“Kind of a crazy week,” Husso said.

Husso’s shutout of the Moose was his first full 60-minute regular-season game since that previous shutout for the Griffins. Lower-body injuries scuttled much of his 2023-24 campaign.

“Huss has bounced back from everything he’s gone through and we know what kind of player he can be for us, and I know he’ll bounce back,” Larkin said.
