We’re just days into the NHL’s 2026-27 season, and we have already seen one of hockey’s rarest feats.
New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin scored a goal near the end of Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, becoming the first netminder in Rangers history to score and just the 18th goalie in NHL history to do it.

Shesterkin also stopped 24 of 25 shots to lead the Rangers to a 5-1 win.
“That was a lot of fun, but to be honest, someone on the blue line, he screened me a little bit when I make the shot and I didn’t see the puck land, so I didn’t know can I celebrate or not,” Shesterkin said after the game. “I just started doing that when everyone was like fired up.”
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton take part in a round of “Fill in the _____” and discuss Shesterkin’s goal against the Lightning.
Tyler Yaremchuk: He sees his opportunity and makes the most of it. This goalie goal by Shesterkin was “_____.”
Carter Hutton: “Squeaky.” Just get it in there, drop to one knee, right? Shesterkin’s about to run into his defenseman, he’s about to play the puck, there’s just so much going on there. He’s such a good puck handler, and he’s gone for it before.
I was exhilarated just watching this, it was great to see. Then hearing the numbers, we pulled it up how many goalies have scored over time. I hope some listeners stop asking me if I’ve ever scored, because there’s only been 18 NHL goalies to do it over time. So it’s pretty impressive for Shesterkin.
And for the Rangers, it’s a big win at home against Tampa, combined with Shesterkin’s goal happening. It’s great to see.
