Insider Claims Oilers Still Looking Into Olympic Goaltender Trade

On and off, the Edmonton Oilers were linked to goaltender Jordan Binnington for much of last season. They’d been looking for an upgrade, eventually settling on what they thought was a fit in Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Since the trade didn’t work out as hoped, GM Stan Bowman and the Oilers might be looking to revisit their goaltending game plan.

One insider, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, is reporting that Edmonton might circle back on conversations about Binnington. He writes:

“Given how Joel Hofer stepped up this season, the Blues will continue to explore trading Jordan Binnington to allow the younger goalie to grow his role. Binnington will be heading into the final season of his contract and has a 10-team no-trade list. I think the Oilers are still looking into this.”

He also goes on to note that there’s a possibility that Sergei Bobrovsky could test free agence if he leaves Florida this offseason, which would make the Panthers another candidate for Binnington.

“It seems like the market for Binnington is beginning to grow again and that his future is not in St. Louis.”

Would the Oilers try to take a swing? Binnington brings proven playoff pedigree, having led the Blues to a Stanley Cup and showing a knack for elevating his game in high-pressure moments, including 4 Nations and the Olympics. Despite recent struggles in St. Louis, his international play and veteran experience suggest he could rebound, especially if the Oilers can find a more consistent defensive game.

Maybe there’s a blockbuster deal available as Kypreos also suggests defenseman Colton Parayko might be a trade candidate. “It’s debatable if the Blues will still be trying to trade him this summer, but perhaps someone other than Buffalo will have interest.” Could that be the Oilers, given he’s from St. Albert, Alberta?

Either would be a bigger swing by the Oilers and likely involve moving on from Jarry, assuming the team could find a taker for him.
