Connor McDavid is expected to sign an extension in Edmonton this off-season, and now John Shannon believes he'll take a big discount for the Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers have been busy transforming their roster this off-season, and heading into the new campaign, there's optimism that this can finally be the year they break Canada's Stanley Cup drought.

There's one big piece of business left for them to accomplish, and that is an extension for superstar captain Connor McDavid, but thus far, very little has happened on that front.

McDavid to take a discount on his next deal?

While there's hope and the expectation that this deal will get done before the season, similar to Leon Draisaitl a year ago, as a result of his busy summer, we're yet to hear much about McDavid's new deal.

One person that is hearing things is John Shannon, who revealed on Oilers Now that McDavid could be ready to take a steep discount on his next deal to help his team.

I think it's a...three or four year deal; I think Connor's gonna come in...lower than a lot of people [are expecting], short term

Like most insiders and reporters this summer, Shannon also believe's it's going to be a short-term deal, but with the belief that McDavid could go as high as $16 or 17 million if he wants too, Shannon seemingly shuts that idea down.

Ultimately, at this point in time all signs continue to point to a 4-5 year deal for the Oilers captain, but while he's capable of resetting the market, the recent report notes that it's likely to come in a lot closer to Draisaitl than some would expect.
