The Leo Carlsson saga has changed the way the hockey world views offer sheets, and now everybody is wondering who could be next to sign one.
Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli stand out above the rest with Carlsson now off the board, however, several other intriguing RFAs remain unsigned. One of them is Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson, and Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman believes the Carolina Hurricanes could be after him.
“I don’t think they’re satisfied. I think they are trying to add something to their team. I think whatever they’re trying to do is big and I have some theories… the other player I kind of heard in conjunction with them is Simon Edvinsson from the Red Wings. He’s a really good player and if they lose Nikishin they’re gonna need a defenseman. I think Edvinsson would be excellent for their system, so I’ve kind of wondered if they’re eyeing him up too,”
The 23-year-old Edvinsson just completed the third and final year of the three-year, $2.68 million entry-level contract he signed with the Red Wings in 2022. He recorded 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists) and was a plus-12 rating in 72 games played last season.
Eric Tulsky is known to be one of the more aggressive general managers in the league, especially when it comes to offer sheets. He was reportedly prepared to send one Evan Bouchard’s way last summer before pivoting to K’Andre Miller, who was eventually acquired via trade after the threat of an offer sheet forced the Rangers hand.
We saw just how well year one of Miller in Carolina worked, and the idea of Edvinsson joining him and Jaccob Slavin on the left side of that blue line is a scary thought for the rest of the NHL. It will be interesting to see whether Tulsky follows through on Friedman’s theory.
