Luke Hughes appears to be a piece for the future in New Jersey, and according to Luke Fox, both he and the Devils are working to get a long-term deal done.
The New Jersey Devils are building a fantastic young core, but the success or failure of this team will ultimately rest on the brothers Hughes, Luke and Jack, who have shown the ability to be great players at the NHL level.
Jack is locked in to a long-term deal, and now it appears Luke is looking for the same, as he heads into this off-season on the back of 91 points in the last two years as a defenseman at just 21-years of age.
The former No. 4 overall pick has developed rather quickly in the NHL, and with a bright future ahead, the Devils want to keep him, and with one of his brothers alongside him, it's the perfect situation.
Now, Luke Fox has revealed on the Halford and Brough podcast that both sides are looking for a long-term extension, hoping to avoid a bridge deal that hampers so many players around the NHL early in their career.
According to Fox, both parties are looking for a deal in the seven-year range, as the 21-year old sees himself as a key piece of the Devils blue line for a long-time to come, with the team hoping that he and Simon Nemec can one day be leaders of this franchise.
With 16 goals and 91 points over the past two years, Hughes has flashed all the potential of a top-line star, and while he's not quite there yet, the hope is that he can become that very, very soon, and right now, all indications are that he will be locked in for a long-time to come.
