Islanders Coaching Move Backfires, DeBoer Can’t Save Season

The New York Islanders face a long offseason after a bold coaching gamble backfired. Firing Patrick Roy and hiring Peter DeBoer was meant to spark a late push, mirroring the Vegas Golden Knights and their newfound success under John Tortorella. Instead, it unraveled in a must-win loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

After a competitive start, the Islanders collapsed on Sunday, allowing three goals in 55 seconds. Booed off home ice, they managed just one late goal in a 4-1 defeat, officially ending playoff hopes and raising serious questions about the organization’s direction.

The Islanders pulled the trigger on a coaching change with just four games left in the season. GM Mathieu Darche said it wasn’t about former coach Roy losing the room, but the fact that they felt it was important to get DeBoer under contract while he was still available. Emily Kaplan of ESPN wrote, “…Heard NY felt they were leaving Ilya Sorokin exposed and needed better defensive structure. There’s more term than Torts deal, so Isles are getting ahead of the cycle before someone else hired DeBoer this summer.”

While Vegas responded with their coaching change and has gone 5-0-1 since his hiring, the Islanders have lost six of their last seven. The team has a 1-2 record and allowed 10 goals in those three games. Adding DeBoer changed nothing.

With a record of 3-7-0 over their last 10, Sunday night made it official. The Islanders are out of the playoffs.

It appears as though the team will have to wait for the coaching bump for next season. Captain Anders Lee said of the elimination: “We needed to get a couple of wins here in the last couple of days, and fell short of it. Lots to think about, to wrap our heads around right now. It sucks. It f****** sucks […] It’s a disappointing finish to what was going pretty good for quite a while this year.”
