‘It’s fine’: Oilers captain Connor McDavid says no cause for concern after Game 2 injury scare

While McDavid would return soon thereafter, he seemed off his game. So much so that with just under five minutes left in the period and the Oilers on a power play, he would cough up a puck that led to Ryan Poehling scoring a shorthanded marker.

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch didn’t have much in the way of an update after the game, saying, “I haven’t gotten any updates, so I’m not sure. Obviously, we’re hoping everything’s fine, but I can’t comment on that.”

McDavid hasn’t seemed himself much through the first two games of the series, held pointless with just seven shots on goal. Part of those struggles have bled over on the Oilers’ power play, where they’ve gone 0-for-6 in the series.

“I think people forget we just got Leo (Leon Draisaitl) and Hysy (Zach Hyman) back,” said McDavid. “We haven’t ran our normal sets in some time. We will be part of this series.”

Knoblauch, meanwhile, said he’s seen McDavid fighting the puck.

“I think he’s putting a lot of pressure on himself,” said Knoblauch. “He wants the team to do well, and he’s a leader. Usually when we have success, he’s a big part of that.

“There’s stretches during the season where he hasn’t been the best player. There’s nights he hasn’t been outstanding. It doesn’t happen very often, but certainly he’s going to find his game.”

He and the Oilers will look to get back on track Friday night when the Oilers and Ducks head to Southern California for Game 3 of the series. Puck drop is set for shortly after 8 p.m. MT.
