Jake Guentzel Addresses Contract Rumors With Penguins
USA TODAY Sports

PITTSBURGH – The future of Jake Guentzel with the Pittsburgh Penguins is still unclear as his name continues to circulate around trade rumors. Despite being one of the most talked about names with the trade deadline looming, Guentzel is keeping his head down and focusing on hockey and helping the Penguins win.

Some reports stated that Guentzel denied a six-year contract from the Penguins but those were later debunked. Guentzel himself said he was not given any offer to turn down and that there haven’t been any talks.

“From my end there’s been no talks of any sorts,” Guentzel said. “I’m just trying to play hockey and that’s all I’ve worried about.”

Guentzel is set to appear in his 500th career game and is keeping thoughts of a new deal or a trade on the back burner. As he nears the age of 30, Guentzel is still an extremely useful piece to the Penguins organization and is arguably the best player to ever share a line with Sidney Crosby.

Head coach Mike Sullivan spoke highly of Guentzel and noted just how important he is to the Penguins.

“He’s an invaluable part of this team,” Sullivan said. “He’s a Pittsburgh Penguin through and through. I think his contributions speak for themselves.”

In 46 games played this year, Guentzel has recorded 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 total points, second on the team in scoring. He’s loved his time in Pittsburgh and doesn’t want to see it come to an end any time soon, especially while he’s still at the top of his game.

“It’s been unbelievable, I’ve been very fortunate to be in this city for eight years,” Guentzel said. “It’s a special organization. I’ve been very fortunate, and I love it here.”

The Penguins likely don’t want to trade Guentzel, but deciding on his future won’t be easy. It’s up to the team to show that they can still be a contender. Both the front office and Guentzel’s camp will see easier negotiations if more winning is involved.
