Jason Robertson's future in Dallas is suddenly in doubt

The Dallas Stars spent the summer reshaping their roster after another Western Conference Final exit, but the biggest storyline entering 2025-26 may not be about who was added.

Instead, it's about whether Jason Robertson's long-term future in Dallas is secure.

Robertson, the 26-year-old forward who has already cemented himself as one of the NHL's most consistent scorers, is heading into the final year of his current contract before restricted free agency.

While the Stars and Robertson's camp have discussed a new deal, reports suggest the sides remain far apart on terms. That gap has fueled weeks of speculation about whether Dallas might eventually explore a trade.

Earlier this summer, DLLS Sports' Sean Shapiro reported that Dallas at least gauged the market for Robertson, though the asking price was extremely high and no deal ever materialized.

That aligns with what Lyle Richardson of Bleacher Report recently wrote, noting the situation remains unsettled:

"The Stars seem content to retain Robertson and see how he performs under new head coach Glen Gulutzan. Nevertheless, the ongoing media trade chatter and uncertainty over his contract situation could keep his name in the rumor mill throughout this season."

Robertson's production speaks for itself, he recorded 80 points last season, following back-to-back years of 40+ goals.

The Stars simply don't have another winger with his mix of scoring touch and offensive creativity. That's why a recent Bleacher Report analysis emphasized how disruptive losing Robertson would be to Dallas's Stanley Cup window.

Still, as the team prepares for another deep run, the contract drama looms.

Personally, I think Dallas needs to finalize this sooner rather than later, lingering uncertainty around their best forward is the kind of distraction that can throw off a season.
