The Winnipeg Jets shared an update on defenseman Haydn Fleury after a frightening injury on Tuesday night.

Fleury crashed into the end boards during a game against the Vegas Golden Knights. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance late in the first period. The team said he was alert and able to move while leaving the rink.

The play happened as Fleury tried to clear the puck near the circle. He was shoved by Keegan Kolesar and lost his balance. Fleury went back-first into the boards, with his head and neck taking heavy contact. He had recently returned from a concussion on Dec. 19. A timeline for his return will come after more testing.

Jets coach Scott Arniel spoke after the game and called the moment scary.

"Yeah, it's unfortunate," Arniel said. "I think that it was far enough away, but just the way Fleury was crossing over, you know, obviously, totally lost his balance, and then went in, went in hard."

The injury sparked an immediate response from captain Adam Lowry, who fought Kolesar right away.

"The response, I would expect something like that, especially with Adam," Arniel said. "You know, the one thing that, you know, Kolesar didn't back away either, so at the end of the day, it got settled, it got settled very quickly, and that's hockey, but you hate to see that stuff, obviously, that's [a] scary, scary situation."

Arniel confirmed Fleury suffered a broken nose. He added that Fleury also hit his back, neck, and head on the play. The coach said the team will wait for results before any next steps.

"Yeah, he's at the hospital," Arniel said. "He's be staying overnight. Obviously, he's got a lot of tests to go through, so there are some… He does have a broken nose, so there's a few different things that kind of happened off it, so a little bit of everything. He obviously slammed his back, hit his neck, hit his head, and then obviously his nose."

The Jets went on to lose 4-3 in overtime, their 10th straight defeat. Tomas Hertl scored the winner on a power play.

Winnipeg will host Edmonton on Thursday, with Logan Stanley expected back in the lineup.
