The Winnipeg Jets are going to be without a key figure on Friday night.

On Thursday, head coach Scott Arniel announced that forward Mark Scheifele will not travel with the team as they head south of the border for Game 6 against the St. Louis Blues.

Scheifele was hurt during Game 5 of the series on Wednesday night. In the first period, the Jets scoring star was involved in a couple of significant collisions. Minutes into the game, Scheifele was decked by Blues forward Brayden Schenn, resulting in an interference penalty against the latter.

Then, with minutes to go in the opening frame, Scheifele was on the receiving end of an awkward hit from Radek Faksa. Scheifele was not seen on the bench when the second period started and didn’t return for the remainder of the game.

Winnipeg was able to power through and come away with a 5-3 win, taking a 3-2 lead in the series. Scheifele was credited with 8:05 of ice time across seven shifts, picking up an assist on Kyle Connor’s goal less than two minutes into the game.

The pair of hits led to some interesting banter between the two head coaches. Blues bench boss Jim Montgomery stated that Scheifele’s premature exit came from the Faksa hit, not the one from Schenn.

Arniel called out Montgomery when it was his turn to take the podium late Wednesday night.

“Well, I didn’t know [Montgomery] got his medical degree,” Arniel said. “Trying to say how our player got hurt. He’s way off base.”

It was reported on Thursday that the NHL wouldn’t be handing out any supplemental discipline for the Schenn hit.

With Scheifele out of the lineup, that leaves a hole in the Jets lineup as they try to erase their road woes so far in this series. After winning the first two games in Winnipeg, the Jets were blasted by the Blues in Games 3 and 4, getting outscored 12-3, with Hart Trophy finalist Connor Hellebuyck getting pulled in each loss.

Scheifele has two goals and six points in the first five games of the series, second on the team to Connor, who has scored eight points thus far.

Puck drop for Game 6 from the Enterprise Center is set for a little after 8 p.m. ET on Friday.
