On Tuesday, the Winnipeg Jets announced that the team has re-signed defenseman Tyrel Bauer to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will carry an NHL cap hit of $775,000 and a minor-league salary of $100,000 through the 2025-26 season.

$125,000 of the contract is guaranteed.

Bauer is coming off his three-year, entry-level contract, which had an NHL AAV of $925,000, with a minors salary of $80,000.

During that time, the Cochrane, Alberta native spent his time solely with the Jets’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. After a couple of promising seasons, Bauer’s offensive production took a dip this past year, posting just two assists in 59 games as the Moose finished last in the Central Division, holding the second-worst record in the AHL. He posted a career-worst plus/minus rating of -21 in the process.

Bauer has earned a reputation as being a bit of a tough guy. Across his three pro seasons, the former Seattle Thunderbird captain has amassed 24 fighting majors, including one in a preseason game against the Calgary Flames in 2023. The 23-year-old has reached 100 penalty minutes twice so far, including a career 105 PIM in 2024-25.

Off the ice, Bauer earned accolades for his work in the community. He was this season’s Moose winner of the AHL Specialty Man of the Year, as well as winning the EPRA Julian Klymkiw Community Service Award and Richard Bue Ultimate Teammate Award.

In 163 AHL appearances, Bauer has scored four goals and 12 assists for 16 points, with a career rating of -39 and 291 penalty minutes. He was originally picked by the Jets in the sixth round, 164th overall, of the 2020 NHL Draft.
