Former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews recently announced through his agent Pat Brisson that he fully intends on making a return to the NHL after having last played in April 2023.
Toews has been limited by symptoms of Long COVID along with a 2021 diagnosis of Chronic Immune Response Syndrome (CIRS).
However, he appears ready to give it a go on a comeback attempt. He's been linked to a handful of clubs - but now a decision appears to have been made.
Per NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun, the framework is in place for Toews to join the Winnipeg Jets, meaning he would be suiting up for his hometown team.
Hearing that Jonathan Toews has an agreement to sign with the Winnipeg Jets. The contract can't be registered until July 1. But Toews has decided to join his hometown Jets according to league sources.
Toews has 883 points (372G, 511A) in 1,067 games, which were all spent with the Blackhawks. He led them to 3 Stanley Cup wins in 2010, 2013 and 2015 and is among the top players in franchise history.
He recently said that he wasn't satisfied with how things came to a close with the Blackhawks in 2023 when he was informed the team would not offer him a new contract, and believes that he still has more to contribute at the NHL level.
The Jets, who won the President's Trophy as the NHL's best team this year, will welcome his experience and leadership.
