The Winnipeg Jets have reportedly signed home town star Jonathan Toews, and now we know the surprise details of his newest NHL contract.
After weeks of speculation, it was reported early on Friday that former three-time Stanley Cup winner Jonathan Toews was headed home to the Winnipeg Jets, meaning he'll take to the ice in the NHL for the first time since 2023.
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, a deal can't be made official until July 1st, but that didn't stop the Jets from announcing the deal on their social media, as the team couldn't keep the exciting news to themselves.
Now, Puck Pedia have officially announced the details of Toews' new deal in Winnipeg, with the team getting the former Blackhawks captain for a steal at just a $2 million salary cap hit.
However, that's not all he'll get on a deal, as the deal is reportedly worth up to $7 million a season based on bonuses, which reportedly include $2.75 million for games played, $1.25 million in playoff bonuses and $1 million for winning the Stanley Cup.
On paper, this is a fantastic deal for both parties, as the Jets get a proven veteran on a manageable salary cap hit as he looks to make his way back to the NHL for the first time in over two years, and if he manages to play well and stay on the ice, Toews gets some nice potential bonuses on this one-year deal.
Ultimately, we won't know if the deal is worth it until we see the 37-year old back on the ice, but if he's anywhere near the player he once was for the Blackhawks, on a one-year deal that gives Winnipeg depth down the middle, this is a great move.
