Welcome to a new week! We last saw you on a bit of a prop run, and we'd very much like to continue that streak on this fine-looking Monday. The NBA market is a bit too slow to open today in full this morning, which brings our attention back to the ice.
Seth Jones is checking off every box we'd want to see for a shots on goal play, so let's go ahead and lock that in. Chicago has made quite a few moves, shipping off most of their highest-volume shooters last week, which leaves Jones as one of the most reliable (and only) options on this team.
The Blackhawks defenseman has been a force at home, going over 2.5 SOG in 15 of his last 19, and with the trades from last week, Jones now leads Chicago in power-play shooting.
That's exactly what we needed to see. Ottawa allows 33.6 shots per game on the road over their last 10, and they become an even better target when you see how many penalties they commit. Over the past month, no team is handing out more power plays than the Senators, and that figures to remain the case here tonight.
For good measure, Ottawa is allowing the sixth-most shots per game to defensemen over the last 10 games, and Jones had five SOGs in a meeting earlier this year. Over 2.5 in three of the last four games against the Senators, we're loading up some shots for Seth Jones here tonight.
Betting: Seth Jones over 2.5 SOG (-120 BetMGM)
We'll highlight this game more in Quick Picks, but the Edmonton-Buffalo game figures to be a fun one. Both teams bring explosive offenses and struggling defenses to the table, which has put the over/under in this game at the rare 7.5 mark.
Goals look great, but so too do the shots. Buffalo is allowing nearly 33 shots per game at home, and with Edmonton averaging nearly 37 shots on the road lately, we very much expect the Oilers to get their opportunities.
Leon Draisaitl has been rolling, especially on the road. He has 4+ shots on goal in five of his last six away games, averaging 7.17 attempts/game in the process. He's enjoyed some big games against Buffalo, tallying 16 total shots on goal over the last three meetings, with a minimum of four in each.
Tonight we need just three, a reasonable ask compared to his production of late.
Betting: Leon Draisaitl over 2.5 SOG (-132 FanDuel)
If you prefer your plays to be plus-money, by all means, consider parlaying these two gentlemen, which comes in at +219 on BetMGM.
Ja Morant suspended from team, no timetable for return after brandishing gun on social media — The Memphis Grizzlies have suspended Ja Morant for at least two games after he committed an NBA gun violation, waving the weapon around on an Instagram story over the weekend. There are some potential legal ramifications at play here due to Morant being in Denver at the time of the video, and the NBA may tack on additional punishments after further review. Morant has helped lead the Grizzlies to the second seed in the Western Conference, and any extended absence could cause Memphis to slip in the standings. The Grizzlies are currently +950 to win the Western Conference, behind five other teams.
Big week ahead for conference tournaments — It's one of the more wonderful times of year for college hoops fans, as the men's conference tournaments begin this week. Automatic bids and a conference title are on the line for many programs as we inch closer and closer to the full 68-team field. The A-10 and ACC tournaments kick off tomorrow, followed by the Big 12, Big East, Big Ten and Pac-12 tomorrow.
Deadline approaching on first big decision for Lamar Jackson and Baltimore — One of the many QB dominoes the league is waiting to fall revolves around what happens between Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. It's been no secret Jackson wants a new contract, and he wants it fully guaranteed like the Browns gave Deshaun Watson. That type of deal may not come, but NFL insiders expect teams to get a chance to wow Jackson and set the market for the former MVP. Baltimore is considering placing the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson, a decision they need to make by tomorrow. What this move allows is for other teams to negotiate a deal with Jackson, and should one be met, Baltimore can simply match and retain its quarterback. Should the deal be deemed too rich for the Ravens, they could let Jackson walk and in return would receive two first-round picks. This situation seems likely to be resolved soon with free agency beginning next week.
