The AHL’s Chicago Wolves will have a familiar face as captain for the next two years. According to a team announcement, Josiah Slavin will return to the Wolves on an AHL contract. Additionally, Chicago shared that it’ll be a two-year deal for Slavin.

Slavin, 27, has been with the Wolves for the last several years. He was named team captain before his first season, the 2024-25 campaign, finishing with 12 goals and 21 points in 66 games, with a -6 rating. He had a similar season last year, scoring six goals and 25 points in 69 games with a +1 rating.

Having the opportunity because he was on a two-year, two-way contract with the Hurricanes, Slavin earned an NHL call-up last season once the Hurricanes had already captured first place in the Metropolitan Division. It was his first opportunity in the NHL since the 2021-22 season, when he was with the Chicago Blackhawks. Slavin finished the regular season going scoreless for Carolina and returned to AHL Chicago for the Calder Cup playoffs.

Unfortunately, Slavin will not have the opportunity in his new contract, unless something changes. Given that it’s an AHL deal, there’s no flexibility for the Hurricanes to recall Slavin should they need him, unless they sign him to an NHL contract at any point during the 2026-27 season. Carolina has only 38 players signed to NHL contracts for the 2026-27 season, so it wouldn’t be too difficult for them to add Slavin should they run into any injury trouble.
