Justin Trudeau sends 11-word message after Canada beats U.S.

Canada prime minister Justin Trudeau sent a strong message after his country beat the US in the 4 Nations Face-Off championship on Thursday night in Boston.

Canada beat the US 3-2 in overtime to win the first year of the event on Connor McDavid’s golden goal. The event was just an exhibition, but the players were completely invested, and the level of competition was extremely high. The charged political climate contributed to the intensity level of the games being elevated. Canadians booed the US national anthem, while American fans returned the favor on Thursday.

Both Trudeau and U.S. President Donald Trump were at the center of the battle, and Trudeau got to send a final message after his country prevailed.

“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” Trudeau’s X account posted.

The victory likely was extra sweet for Trudeau and Canadians, especially after the country lost in the round robin game against the US. They had to endure a lot of trash talk, including from President Trump, who has taunted Canada as the 51st state.

NHL Analyst Links Sabres' Young Goalie as Surprise Replacement for Oilers' Stuart Skinner

NHL analyst Rob Couch of NHL Trade Rumors recently linked Sabres young goalie Devon Levi as a suitable replacement for Stuart Skinner for next season. Top-tier goaltenders are rare enough in today's NHL, and for the Edmonton Oilers, that's a brutal reality they have to deal with. Their squad has its eyes on next year's Stanley Cup, as they do not want to suffer a miserable 3-peat loss, but given that their number one goalie would be none other than Stuart Skinner, it's doubtful that they will be treated as favorites. The Oilers are Missing That Special Something to get Over the Hurdle, and That's Goaltending Their team, in the last ten years, has demonstrated that it has what it takes to come out of the Western Conference on top, but to capture that ultimate prize has always escaped their grasp, and all eyes and fingers land on Stuart Skinner. They need to address this hurdle to avoid suffering a similar fate down the line. NHL Trade Rumors' Rob Couch just speculated about a list of intriguing possibilities, among them Buffalo Sabres goaltender Devon Levi, age 23, who has only 39 games' worth of NHL experience. 'Those are the three that the Oilers should have their sights on as Arturs Silovs is probably not an option anymore after the Vancouver Canucks traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins instead of a rival. But a long shot I've identified is Levi. 'He has spent the last two seasons between the NHL and AHL as the Sabres haven't been good and he hasn't found his footing in the NHL. That could be a reality once again as Alex Lyon was signed for two years. The Oilers are a much better team defensively if you actually look at stats and not opinion. He would still cost a lot and I'm not sure if the Sabres are ready to give up on him yet, but a bounce-back season by Luukkonen could change things,' Rob Couch wrote. Devon Levi flashed quality hockey last season and could be tempting for GM Stan Bowman. By acquiring Levi, the Oilers would be getting a young netminder who has high long-term potential.

Browns' Shedeur Sanders could be losing valuable opportunity after injury update

Just when it seemed everything was going right for Shedeur Sanders, the Cleveland Browns' rookie quarterback caught an unlucky break on Wednesday. The 23-year-old QB was sidelined during Wednesday's joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering an oblique injury. Per Kelsey Russo of the team website, the 2025 fifth-round pick won't practice Thursday and is considered day-to-day. He is deemed unlikely to play in Saturday's preseason game against Philadelphia, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on NFL Network. Before Wednesday's practice, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed rookie QB Dillon Gabriel will start against Philadelphia as long as he's healthy enough to play. The 2025 third-rounder missed Cleveland's preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers because of a hamstring issue. However, Stefanski previously said Sanders would get more reps this week after a solid preseason debut. The former Colorado Buffaloes star received the start in the 30-10 win over Carolina, going 14-of-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdown passes. Not playing against Philadelphia could disrupt Sanders' momentum. More importantly, it may eliminate another opportunity for him to overtake Gabriel in Cleveland's four-way QB competition. Sanders is listed as the Browns QB4 behind Gabriel, Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco on the team's unofficial depth chart. Despite questions about Gabriel's size (5-foot-11, 205 pounds), the coaching staff seems to favor him over Sanders. Earlier this offseason, Gabriel's processing speed reportedly impressed Browns coaches, giving him an edge over Sanders. The former Oregon Ducks star also received reps with the first-team offense during OTAs and mandatory minicamp, while his fellow rookie didn't. If Gabriel plays well against the Eagles, that would continue to affirm the coaching staff's confidence in the 24-year-old QB. Neither Sanders nor Gabriel is expected to be the Week 1 starter for the Browns. It's likely going to be Flacco, who helped Cleveland make the playoffs in 2023 when he went 4-1 during a late-season stretch. Still, another solid preseason showing could help Sanders position himself to replace 40-year-old Flacco in the future. With the setback, it may take more time to climb the depth chart.

Even Mike Macdonald couldn't rattle Sam Darnold, Seahawks insider reports

With so much riding on Sam Darnold, the Seattle Seahawks are doing everything they can to make sure he's ready for the season itself. In such cases, having a defensive mastermind like Mike Macdonald as a head coach comes in handy. Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune detailed how Macdonald has tested Darnold throughout training camp with various pressures and coverages. While Macdonald's defense gave Darnold trouble early on, but the quarterback has adjusted and is now throwing the ball with ease. Sam Darnold figuring out Mike Macdonald's complex defense "Darnold has gotten accustomed to Macdonald’s tricks along the defensive front," Bell wrote. "The quarterback is now anticipating rookie safety Nick Emmanwori really being an outside linebacker off the edge, about to blitz him. Darnold is figuring out Macdonald’s shifting of defensive backs, from what looks like man-to-man coverage at the snap to what is in fact zone, and vice versa. "Darnold is acing it. After a spate of interceptions early in camp, he hasn’t thrown one in practice since Monday, Aug. 4, an overthrow that landed into the arms of safety D’Anthony Bell. He’s looking more like the quarterback who went 14-3 with 4,300 yards passing and 35 touchdowns in a breakout 2024 season with Minnesota. He’s looking more like the QB the Seahawks traded Geno Smith to get." Even Macdonald conceded that Darnold has figured out his defense, noting how his quick release is giving the unit trouble. “It’s a pain in the butt to pressure you, because the ball’s out and you’re making (quick throws)," Macdonald told Darnold during Sunday's practice. “It’s hard to get to you.” What version of Darnold the Seahawks are going to get is crucial for their season as a whole. Will they get the version that excelled last season with the Minnesota Vikings, or will they get the career journeyman he was before that? Only time will tell for sure, but they're doing everything they can to bring out the best version of him. “I thought we’ve had a really good few weeks,” Darnold said. “Just awesome to see where the team has come from the beginning of training camp.”

Perhaps Superman Paul Skenes has found his kryptonite

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes may continue to be one of the top contenders for the National League Cy Young Award, but there is one place where he has appeared mortal this season. On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers did to Skenes what they have done to plenty of MLB pitchers in 2025 ... put up big offensive numbers. For the second time this season (Skenes also pitched in Milwaukee on June 25), the Brewers forced him from the game after just 4.0 innings on Tuesday night, logging six hits and four runs during his time on the mound. Both of those performances came at Milwaukee's home stadium (American Family Field) and both are now Skenes' shortest outings of the season. While another NL Central team has put up more runs against Skenes this season (the St. Louis Cardinals nicked him for five runs in 6.0 innings on April 8), no other team has had the same kind of success over multiple starts by Skenes in 2025 as have the Brewers inside their home stadium. In all this season, Skenes has given up 10 hits and eight runs in 8.0 innings in Milwaukee. It was his third career outing on the road against the Brewers, with his lone 2024 start representing arguably the best outing of his rookie season. On July 11, 2024, Skenes struck out 11 and didn't allow a hit over 7.0 innings as the Pirates would eventually post a 1-0 victory. Tuesday's short outing was highlighted by a pair of Milwaukee home runs, including a leadoff solo shot by Sal Frelick that quickly set the tone for the Brewers. While Milwaukee's hit parade helped raise Skenes' ERA on the season to 2.13, it's hardly any reason for concern in a season where the 23-year-old right-hander is still a heavy favorite (-600) to win the NL Cy Young Award, per BetMGM. Skenes struggling in Milwaukee is likely more yet another stamp of approval on the Brewers' potential to be a threat once the postseason arrives. With an 18-4 record since the All-Star break entering Tuesday, Milwaukee has taken over the NL Central race from the Chicago Cubs. So what's the good news for Skenes? This is Pittsburgh's last trip to Milwaukee this season and the next-to-last series for the Pirates against the red-hot Brewers. Milwaukee will visit PNC Park for a three-game series on Sept. 5-7, and if Skenes gets a chance for revenge against Milwaukee, there couldn't be a better place for him to take the mound. This season, in 11 starts covering 68.2 innings, Skenes has a 1.70 ERA in the Steel City.
