As the calendar flipped to 2025, the Calgary Flames found themselves in a playoff spot, defying expectations after the 2023-24 season in which they were deadline sellers and embracing a rebuild. But, a solid start to the 2024-25 campaign has them more competitive than analysts believed they’d be. Following their recent win over the Vancouver Canucks, Flames forward Nazem Kadri didn’t shy away from addressing the skeptics.
After the game, Kadri challenged the media, “Anyone project that?” Regarding the Flames’ unexpected playoff position, Kadri highlighted the team’s ability to exceed preseason predictions. He took a sarcastic shot at the media by labeling them “experts,” which got a good laugh.
Before the start of the season, the Flames were not pegged as a playoff contender. Many believed a player like Kadri might eventually ask to be moved, having not signed up for a rebuild when he joined the club in free agency. Most experts projected them to miss the playoffs.
Despite the challenges, Calgary enters 2025 with a playoff spot within their reach.
Kadri referenced the importance of teamwork and says Calgary’s players have embraced a gritty, collaborative style of play, allowing them to stay competitive in a tight playoff race. The Flames have found a way to play consistently, even if they’ve moved out key pieces over the past several months.
Kadri noted, “There’s a lot of hockey left to play.” Still, being in a playoff position at the start of the new year gives the team confidence. Kadri believes the Flames can build on their position and he noted the team understands the importance of sustaining this momentum.
Kadri seems pleased (as are likely the Flames) that they have, thus far, proven doubters wrong. While there’s still a long way to go, the roster has battled hard and put themselves in a potential position to be a playoff contender. Can they surprise the skeptics and hang in there for the regular season?
As the Flames continue their journey through 2025, they’ve proved they belong. They remain a surprise storyline for the 2024-25 season.
