Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes has pulled off several solid trades since taking over alongside Jeff Gorton.
However, with what we've seen in recent weeks and again last night, I believe we can say that his best trade was made with the Edmonton Oilers, acquiring what has turned into Lane Hutson.
Hutson, who now has 6 points in 5 NHL games and added another assist last night...
He is truly excellent, and he's only 20 years old.
Let's recall how Hutson eventually ended up with the Habs.
On March 21, 2022, Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens acquired what became the 62nd overall pick in the 2022 draft + William Lagesson + a 7th round pick in 2024.
In return, Hughes and Jeff Gorton sent Brett Kulak to the Edmonton Oilers.
You know the rest. With the 62nd overall pick in 2022, the Canadiens set their sights on a small 5-foot-10, 165-pound defenseman named Lane Hutson.
Without exaggerating too much, I think we can say that this is an acquisition that could change everything for Montreal's future.
Having a player like Hutson really seems capable of transforming the face of a franchise.
Some are already making bold comparisons.
"Can we now say the Canadiens have their own Cale Makar?" - Georges Laraque
It's hard not to get too excited right now, and we're trying to stay cautious, but yes, Hutson seems to be a very special player.
What an acquisition!
