On Monday, Los Angeles Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper was forced to leave his team’s game against the Dallas Stars after suffering a lower-body injury.
The incident happened with just a few minutes remaining in the first period. When attempting to make a save on a point shot, Kuemper was run into by Stars forward Mikko Rantanen. As play briefly resumed, Dallas winger Wyatt Johnston banked the puck off Kuemper and into the net, but the goal was waved off due to the collision.

There was no penalty called on Rantanen, even though Kuemper was trying to make a save while in the blue paint.
Kuemper was attended to by the Kings’ training staff before leaving the ice. Anton Forsberg entered the game in relief as a result. In 16 minutes of action, Kuemper stopped all five shots he faced.
The 35-year-old is having another solid start to the season for the Kings. In starting 22 of the team’s first 31 games, Kuemper has a record of 10-6-6 with a 2.21 goals-against average, a .916 save percentage and two shutouts. He had helped Los Angeles pick up points in each of his past three appearances, including a 38-save performance in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames this past Saturday.
While it’s too early to tell the severity of Kuemper’s injury, the Kings might have to ride Forsberg for a little bit, with Pheonix Copley being a viable veteran to call up from L.A.’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Ontario Reign.
Kuemper’s efforts have helped keep the Kings near the top of the Pacific Division. Heading into Monday night, the team sat third in the division, four points out of first place.
