It has been a good 24 hours for Kings winger Jared Wright. After receiving his first recall of the season on Friday, he received a two-year contract extension today, per a team announcement. The deal, which begins next season, will carry an AAV of $925K, meaning he will receive the minimum salary in each of those years.
The 23-year-old was a sixth-round pick by the Kings back in 2022, going 169th overall. He spent three seasons at Denver University before turning pro late in the 2024-25 campaign, getting into a handful of games with AHL Ontario after potting 17 points in 44 games with the Pioneers.
Last season, Wright split the year between the Reign and the Kings. In 54 games in the minors, he potted 17 goals and 13 assists in 54 games. That performance earned him a fair bit of time with the big club as he got into 23 games with Los Angeles, collecting four assists, 18 blocks, and 27 hits in 11:26 per game of playing time in a bottom-six role. He also played in each of their four playoff games but was held off the scoresheet.
It’s expected that Wright will hold a similar spot in the lineup while he’s up to cover for Mats Zuccarello’s injury after putting up three points in two games with the Reign to start the season.
Wright is 33 games away from being waiver-eligible although he’s technically exempt through next season if he fails to get to 60 total NHL appearances (regular season and playoffs combined) by then. If the Kings want to keep him as injury insurance, they’ll have to keep that number in mind as the season progresses.
