Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch met with the media prior to Game 6 tonight, where he issued a warning to the Panthers, saying that his team will be fully ready.
Down 3-2 in the Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers are primed for another do-or-die encounter against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night in Game 6 at Amerant Bank Arena. Their objective: send it back home to Edmonton for a Game 7.
It's a familiar scenario for the Oilers. A year ago, they were down 3-0 against these same Panthers and came within an inch of doing the unthinkable.
Edmonton won three consecutive games, including Game 5 on the road in Florida, then forced a 3-3 tie of the series back at home before coming up short in an agonizing 2-1 loss in Game 7.
Now, nearly a year to the day later, the Oilers are back in Sunrise with another chance at keeping their championship hopes alive.
If they win Tuesday, they'll return to Rogers Place with a chance at hoisting the Cup in front of the home faithful on Friday.
This group has made a habit of playing their best hockey when the season hangs in the balance. Pressure does not intimidate them; it inspires them.
Tuesday's elimination game is the kind of scenario they have risen to the challenge of before, and Kris Knoblauch made sure the Panthers heard his warning loud and clear.
'I think our guys are resilient,' Head Coach Kris Knoblauch said after Monday's practice. 'That's been a term used to describe these guys for a long period of time with how many elimination games they've had. For some reason, when their backs are up against the wall and they've hit rock bottom, or they're facing elimination, they respond and play really well. We won a ton of games last year in the playoffs and numerous elimination games, whether it was against Florida or Vancouver. When their backs are against the wall, they play their best and they don't panic.'
Despite the ramifications, the Oilers are not backing down from the challenge. They're enjoying the chance to extend their streak and write a new ending in front of Oil Country.
