The Edmonton Oilers have surged late in the season, climbing the standings all the way up to lead the Pacific Division entering Saturday's slate of games.
Their recent stretch has included five consecutive wins, all of them with the Oilers scoring at least three goals, and has helped Edmonton reach 87 points and a 39-28-9 record with just six games left in the schedule.
With the postseason around the corner, however, there is still a big question the Oilers must address quickly: who will start in net during the playoffs?
Head coach Kris Knoblauch addressed the situation directly after Friday's win over the Chicago Blackhawks, but didn't offer much clarity about the future.
Knoblauch outlined how both goalies have contributed during the stretch run while appearing on "The Jim Rome Show" on Friday, but didn't commit to naming a postseason starter for now.
“It’s going really well. When you’re on a 5-game winning streak, goaltending obviously has a lot to do with that,” Knoblauch said. “Always, when you’re having successful years, goaltending is a big part.
“Tristan Jarry got off to a great start with us. Had an injury, kinda had a little setback. Took a while to get his game back, but his last two starts have been fantastic.
“Connor Ingram was brought in as a depth goalie, and now he’s taken over the role as our starting goalie right now. So right now, we’re very happy with our situation.”
With the playoffs nearing, Knoblauch’s comments could signal that he'd prioritize current form over prior roles and expectations. That said, it sounded like the door is open for the Oilers to deploy a rotation or simply delay their decision until the final minute.
Jarry has posted an 18-9-2 record this season, averaging 3.26 goals-against per game and earning a .884 save percentage. Ingram, meanwhile, has a 14-8-2 record with a 2.69 GAA and a .898 SV%.
