Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov requested a trade last week and told reporters Monday the decision was driven by "poor communication and respect," not financial demands.
Kucherov, who turns 34 next June, is a pending unrestricted free agent after this season. He is seeking a six-year contract with an average annual value near $20 million. The Lightning’s highest offer was $15 million annually, according to ESPN’s Kevin Weekes; their initial proposal was approximately $13 million.
Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois released a statement Friday night saying the team "unequivocally has no intention of trading Nikita." Head coach Jon Cooper reiterated Saturday that Kucherov "is 100% a part of this team" and committed for the season. Kucherov confirmed Monday he remains focused on helping teammates win.
The Lightning have held only two contract conversations with Kucherov in the past four months, sources told the reporter. That contrasts with expectations among peers that a deal would be done by July 1.
BriseBois has previously moved on from high-salary players whose long-term commitments conflicted with cap flexibility—including Steven Stamkos in 2024, Alex Killorn, and Yanni Gourde. Two NHL sources suggested BriseBois may have allowed negotiations to stall to prompt Kucherov to request a trade, shifting public perception from “GM forced out star” to “star chose to leave.” One former Lightning player said, “I wouldn’t put it past him.” An NHL executive countered that BriseBois typically “grinds guys down to get it” and waits for players to accept his terms or walk.
A trade remains unlikely. The Lightning would receive minimal return for a rental player nearing free agency, and moving Kucherov would severely damage their Stanley Cup chances. Most analysts expect Kucherov to remain in Tampa through the season and depart via free agency.
Six teams emerged as plausible destinations if Kucherov exits:
Montreal Canadiens: Coach Martin St. Louis is a former teammate; Ivan Demidov shares Kucherov’s agent; the Canadiens made the Eastern Conference Finals last season and operate under tight cap management.
Utah Mammoth: Defenseman Mikhail Sergachev is Kucherov’s close friend and former Lightning teammate; forward Clayton Keller posted a 90-point season; Utah offers a low-media-profile market similar to Tampa.
Vegas Golden Knights: Countryman Ivan Barbashev is a Milstein client; the Golden Knights are a Western Conference contender; Nevada has no state income tax.
Dallas Stars: Texas has no state income tax; Jason Robertson and Tyler Seguin are unrestricted free agents whose combined $21.85 million cap hit comes off the books next summer.
New York Rangers: Igor Shesterkin anchors the crease; the Rangers project cap space for next season.
Chicago Blackhawks: Connor Bedard headlines a rebuilding core; the team ranked 31st in the league after 15 games; GM Kyle Davidson faces mounting pressure to accelerate the turnaround.
