LA Kings Prospect Update – Week 10/12
Imagn Images

Another week has passed, so it’s time for our weekly LA Kings prospect update. While tracking the prospects this week, it was hard to identify one skater who stood out. Instead, I looked at the goalies and picked one performance that highlighted the week.

This week’s update featured 26-year-old netminder Erik Portillo. Portillo played in one game for the Ontario Reign (AHL) and helped backstop the club to a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Gulls on October 14th. Portillo hasn’t been the clear-cut number-one goalie, nor has he been splitting starts.

With Hampton Slukynsky and Carter George in the fold, they will need starts. Portillo is the number-three goalie in the organization, and he needs starts to get back in game form. So, the Reign have been rotating starts with all three goalies to even out the playing time.

This week was Portillo’s first start since opening night on October 2nd. 12 days is a long time, but the Reign schedule has been funky at the start of the season (five games in three weeks). After a rough five goals against in a high-scoring overtime win on opening night, Portillo bounced back with a 25-save effort in the win over the Gulls. Unlike opening night, Portillo didn’t have happy feet in the blue paint and showed more poise. It also helped that the defense played better than on opening night.

Here is how the rest of the prospects did during the week:
