The Montreal Canadiens star defenseman and 2025 Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson was not invited to the Team USA orientation camp for the 2026 Winter Olympics. His omission from the list of 16 defensemen drew reactions from many.
The Hutson family could follow in the footsteps of the Staal, Hughes, and Tkachuk families in becoming an influential brotherhood in the League.
Lane's older brother, Quinn, signed a two-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers last April, while his younger brother, Cole, was drafted by the Washington Capitals in 2024, and Lars is still playing in the junior ranks. Although all four brothers were born in the U.S., their father is Canadian, making them eligible to play for Canada internationally.
In a recent interview with Grant McCagg on the Recrutes HabsCast podcast, Lane's father, Rob Hutson, revealed he disagreed with Bill Guerin's decision not to invite his son to the orientation camp and even opened the door to the possibility of his sons representing Canada.
In the interview, Rob Hutson explained that he did not agree with Team USA's decision to leave Lane off the orientation camp roster and reminded listeners that his sons could play for Canada.
After spending his entire junior career in the U.S. with the National Development Program and NCAA, Hutson has represented the United States multiple times internationally.
None of the brothers have represented Canada yet, but things could change if the U.S. doesn't include him in their plans.
Following a record-breaking 66-point rookie season, Hutson is entering the next season with another chip on his shoulder and will look to prove everyone wrong once again.
