Rankings

As opposed to previous years, the 2025 NHL Draft has a fairly weak selection of Finnish talent. One of the highlights—and perhaps the headliner—is two-way defenseman Lasse Boelius. His brief stint in Finland’s top league (Liiga), combined with his promising performances alongside players his age, make him well-positioned to be one of the first from his nation off the board.

First, let’s dive into the numbers he put up. Boelius spent seven games in Liiga, piling up two assists, a plus-1 rating, and two penalty minutes. He spent most of his time in Finland’s top junior league, U20 SM-sarja, where he recorded four goals and 14 assists for 18 points, a minus-3 rating, and 16 penalty minutes across 34 contests.

Though his point totals don’t jump off the page, playing in Liiga as a 17-year-old alone is a feat worth mentioning. Over the past five seasons, only 18 defenders his age skated in a single game, while eight recorded multiple points. Boelius’s stat line was nearly identical to Aron Kiviharju‘s from last season. The 2024 fourth-round pick had two points in seven games, too.

For Boelius, what stands out is his mobility and puck-moving ability. Starting with the former, his skating makes him dangerous at both ends of the ice. On retrievals and when defending the rush, his legs are helpful. He could use some improvement when defending those rushes, which showed in Liiga, but skill alone inspires growth on that front.

Boelius is also a terrific puck-mover. With his strong vision and skating, he’s that much more intimidating in transition. Though he’s not particularly physical or imposing in stature, Boelius isn’t someone to play the dump-and-chase game with—he may burn you. His on-puck play is easily pro-ready.

Additionally, there’s some power-play upside here. Boelius has been used on the man advantage in both juniors and the pros, and projects as an effective quarterback. His offensive and transitional potential, while not fully realized, are high. He’s made his teammates better at all levels.

While Boelius may be prone to some errors in his zone, the skill is hard to pass up. Though it may sound like he’s an offensive defenseman, the tools are there for him to be useful in all areas of the ice. He retrieves pucks extremely well, won’t get beat off the rush if he improves his positioning, and can be a dynamic defensive-zone threat with open ice. An ideal modern-day two-way rearguard.

Lasse Boelius  NHL Draft Projection

Seen by many as the best draft-eligible player from his country, Boelius could land in either the late second or early third round of the 2025 NHL Draft.

Quotables

“When he’s got control, Boelius excels at supporting organized and efficient pushes up the ice. He sees the ice well, makes strong passes, and has the step to jump into an open lane. Needs a lot of honing to be more than a rush defenseman, but his ability to support possession up the ice and keep it in the O-zone is mature beyond its years.” – Gabriel Foley, Recruit Scouting

“His skill set is marked by elite passing accuracy, strong skating mechanics, and the ability to generate offensive transition while maintaining defensive reliability. Though not a standout physically or offensively, his well-rounded abilities and hockey IQ make him a valuable asset for a National League organization.” – Neutral Zone

“First of all, he was pivotal to Finland’s win at the U18 Five Nations, playing top minutes in every game and being the kind of driver from the backend the team needed to take down opponents who boasted stronger rosters. In my mind, he performed better than any Swedish defenceman at this event.” – Lassi Alanen, Elite Prospects

NHL Potential

Boelius has it in him to become a regular NHL defenseman someday. If that dream becomes a reality, he has the upside to be anywhere between a second- and third-pairing player with power-play usage.
