Laval Rocket Hire Assistant Coach

This coaching job with the Laval Rocket will be Urquhart’s second stint as an assistant coach in the AHL, as he previously spent three seasons behind the San Diego Gulls’ bench between 2018 and 2021. 

As a player, Urquhart spent time with the Montreal Canadiens AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs, during the 2010-11 season, where he put up five assists in 23 games. Therefore, joining the Laval Rocket coaching staff means he is returning to the Canadiens’ organization for the second time in his entire hockey career (player + coach).

Urquhart was a journeyman defenseman as a player, bouncing between the ECHL and AHL, before spending the last three years of his player career in Italy. He officially retired as a player following the 2013-14 campaign. 

With the hiring of Urquhart, Laval Rocket‘s new head coach Daniel Jacob confirmed his entire staff for the 2026-27 AHL season. Urquhart will be in charge of both the forwards and the power play. Meanwhile, Jacob’s other assistant coach, Martin Laperriere, will be responsible for the defence and penalty kill. 

The other coaches on the Rocket’s staff include Ilia Ejov, who will return as the goalie coach after being hired by the team in February, and Charles Juneau will be in his fifth season as the video coach.
