Toronto Maple Leafs fans are targeting Mitch Marner on social media for refusing a one-for-one trade to the Carolina Hurricanes involving Mikko Rantanen.
Back in March, the Carolina Hurricanes were looking into trading Mikko Rantanen only a few weeks after acquiring him from the Colorado Avalanche in a deal with Martin Necas and Jeff Drury, when general manager Eric Tulsky called up his Leafs counterpart Brad Treliving to inquire about Mitch Marner.
Before Rantanen eventually ended up being traded to the Dallas Stars for Logan Stankoven and draft picks, Tulsky offered a one-for-one trade between Rantanen and Marner, but it didn't happen because the player declined to waive his no-trade clause to join the Canes.
Insider Elliotte Friedman made it public on Sportsnet at the time:
'The Hurricanes initially asked for Mitch Marner in return for Rantanen. Because it was for Rantanen, the Maple Leafs had to consider it. They told the winger their desire is to sign him, but they had to ask in this case. As is his right, Marner declined to move, re-iterating his desire to stay.'
A few months later, fans are unhappy with Marner as Rantanen is currently playing a big role in the Dallas Stars' playoff success, while the Leafs forward has been struggling to bring an offensive impact in the post-season.
Many are calling him out on X:
Rantanen is currently at the top of the NHL with 19 points, including nine goals, while Marner has only managed to score 12 points, with two goals.
While seeing Marner refuse a trade shows his dedication to Toronto, many fans would've preferred to get Mikko Rantanen and a long-term contract.
Over the coming years, if Marner ends up staying in Toronto, fans will keep that failed trade in mind and continue comparing both players to see if the team could've been better if Marner had accepted the deal - especially if he can't help the Leafs come back in the series against the Panthers.
