Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl went to his hometown of Cologne, Germany, and surprised young hockey fans there with a bunch of new equipment.
Leon Draisaitl went back to his hometown of Cologne, Germany to start the summer with a gesture of meaning: giving back to the community that helped nurture his hockey dreams.
The Edmonton Oilers superstar donated 29 full sets of new hockey equipment to the Junghaie youth hockey team for the 2025-26 season and the 2026-27 season.
The gift, which was made in partnership with the NHLPA Goals & Dreams program, helped the next generation of young hockey players from Cologne directly.
Number 29 is meaningful: it's his number with the Oilers and a nod to where he came from. Before he was NHL royalty, he spent over six years developing his game in Cologne, including time with Junghaie and the city's U16 squad.
'It feels great to return to where it all started,' Draisaitl said in a press release. 'I wouldn't be where I am today without the support I received growing up in Cologne, Germany.'I hope this equipment contribution with NHLPA Goals & Dreams to the Junghaie helps the next generation fall in love with the game and build a strong future for our sport.'
Leon Draisaitl has been playing for Germany on the international level for quite a long time now.
He helped Team Europe win a silver medal at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and became the first hockey player ever to be named Germany's Sportsman of the Year in 2020.
Off his second straight record-breaking NHL season, Draisaitl added to his roll call of honors by taking home the Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy as the league's top goal-scorer, and still somehow finding time to fit in his busy schedule to give back to young hockey at home.
His donation isn't just gear, it's inspiration for young players to come and emulate him.
