Lightning’s Brayden Point out week-to-week with injury

It appears as though the Tampa Bay Lightning have dodged a major bullet on the injury front.

Lightning head coach Jon Cooper told media members, including the team’s play-by-play voice Dave Randorf, that Point is out on a week-to-week basis.

“We avoided the worst case scenario,” Cooper said. “His season is not over, but he is week-to-week.”

Point, who was one of the six players named to Team Canada’s roster for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina during the off-season, exited Tampa Bay’s game on Monday night early, as he fell awkwardly to the ice after scoring a goal against Philadelphia while getting tangled up with Flyers defenseman Cam York.

Point, who has finished better than a point-per-game in each of the past three seasons, took some time to settle into a productive grove. With 19 points in his past 15 games, he is up to 30 points (11 goals and 19 assists) in 37 games played.

With Point sidelined, Dominic James will move up into the top six to center Jake Guentzel and Gage Goncalves on Cooper’s second line while Brandon Hagel, Anthony Cirelli and Nikita Kucherov comprise the top unit.

Following a shaky start to their year back in October, the Lightning have been the best team in the Eastern Conference since shaking off those struggles. While they’re currently in second place in the Atlantic Division, they beat out the first-place Detroit Red Wings as well as the Metropolitan-leading Carolina Hurricanes when it comes to points percentage with their 28-13-3 record.

After defeating the Flyers on Monday night, Tampa Bay is right back in action on Tuesday night for another Eastern Conference showdown in Pennsylvania against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Following Tuesday’s game, the Bolts will continue their road trip out West with stops in St. Louis and Dallas to wrap up their slate for the week.
