At long last, MacKenzie Weegar is officially a member of the Utah Mammoth. As the hockey world waited a few hours to see whether he would waive his no-trade clause, the star defenseman has okayed the move, and the deal is now complete.
It’s a blockbuster sending Weegar from Calgary to Utah in exchange for a package that includes Olli Maatta, forward prospect Jonathan Castagna, and three 2026 second-round draft picks.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman first broke the news of a potential trade Wednesday afternoon on X (formerly Twitter).
“Also today: hearing Utah and Calgary are closing in on a MacKenzie Weegar deal that awaits his approval,”
Eric Francis then confirmed that Weegar waived his no-trade clause to join the Mammoth.
“Hearing MacKenzie Weegar has waived his no-trade clause, opening the door for his trade to Utah,”
The 32-year-old Weegar is in year three of the eight-year, $50 million extension signed with the Flames shortly after being acquired in a trade from the Panthers in 2022. He’s tallied 21 points (three goals, 18 assists) through 60 games played for Calgary this season.
Utah has been said to want to make a big splash, and acquiring Weegar is exactly that, adding to a list of sizeable moves they’ve made since relocating – Mikhail Sergachev, JJ Peterka, among others. They sit in a good position to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2019-20 bubble as the Arizona Coyotes, and Weegar should only help them now and moving forward in the loaded Central Division.
For Calgary, the rebuild continues, as they accumulate another package of future assets, similar to the Rasmus Andersson trade from mid January. All of the attention will now shift to what GM Craig Conroy does with his veterans up front, particularly Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman.
