Maple Leafs Acquire Reese Johnson From Wild

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made one last deal as NHL Trade Deadline day comes to a close. They have announced the acquisition of forward Reese Johnson from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for future considerations.

The Maple Leafs made a few deals as the deadline neared its end, and this Johnson trade appears to be the last one. Earlier today, they also acquired Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers and Brandon Carlo from the Boston Bruins. The deal for Johnson could be to add an extra body to the organization, with Conor Timmins, Connor Dewar, Nikita Grebenkin, and Fraser Minten all leaving.

Johnson, 26, is known as a tough player to go up against. Not only is he intense, but he also stands up for his teammates and isn’t afraid to drop the gloves—something he excels at. He has taken on some pretty tough opponents in his young career, including Nikita Zadorov, Brayden Schenn, and Toronto’s own Simon Benoit.

Johnson has appeared in three NHL games this season and hasn’t recorded a point. Over 144 career games with the Chicago Blackhawks and Wild, he has seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points, along with 103 penalty minutes. Johnson is on a one-year, $775,000 contract and will be a restricted free agent this summer.

It’s unlikely that Johnson will earn a roster spot with the Maple Leafs this season. He is expected to report to the American Hockey League (AHL) and join the Toronto Marlies for their playoff push. He will be joining fellow tough guys Ryan Reaves and Kyle Clifford, who are also with the Marlies. However, he could be an option next season if injuries arise or if Reaves retires, providing a physical presence in matchups against players like Matt Rempe and defend his teammates.
