Mitch Marner's recent comments have drawn backlash from fans in Toronto, and now he's been ripped by Steve Simons for his tactic's upon leaving the Maple Leafs.

Mitch Marner's departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs caused plenty of agony for the player, his teammates and fans, with the All-Star winger officially traded to the Vegas Golden Knights earlier this season.

However, any good will that Marner still had left with the organization is all but gone now, after a recent interview where he called out the fans, stating that he feared for his safety in his home after the teams latest Stanley Cup Playoffs loss.

Why Marner's "Safety" Excuse Isn't Flying in Toronto

While some felt sympathy for the star winger, others certainly don't, with analyst Steve Simons quickly calling out Marner and his agent for their decision to rip Maple Leafs fans on the way out.

The Leafs, doing their due diligence, looked into the situation with Marner, who was still their property at the time. Their security people did the same as part of the regular employment. They found nothing to be concerned about. They wonder now about the veracity of all that is being told.

That Marner and Ferris are essentially telling the same story at the same time is indicative of planning and planning a reason for wanting out of Toronto more than anything else. And from their side, hoping fans will still buy this version of Marner, the $11 million a year, 100-point victim.

Golden Knights Star Under Fire as Leafs Fans Call Out Narrative

Unfortunately for Marner, the narrative he tried to spin just hasn't worked, and while some feel somewhat sympathetic, for the most part, fans just haven't bought it, and now he looks like he's trying to play the victim.

All this will be on display when the Golden Knights visit Toronto in January, and after the fans were called out by the player, it's safe to say they won't be giving him a warm reception when he returns.
