Ahead of Thursday’s first on-ice session, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced their 73-man training camp roster.

Auston Matthews, Gavin McKenna, John Tavares and William Nylander headline the 41 forwards invited to camp, while new acquisition Darren Raddysh is the cornerstone of the new-look defence corps. 25 defencemen are heading to training camp, while Sergei Bobrovsky is the standout among the seven goaltenders invited.

Toronto held its Media Day on Wednesday, where Matthews was front and centre, flanked by McKenna and Tavares at the podium.

“He’s full-go, 100 percent. Physically, he looks great,” Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka said of Matthews. “More importantly, I’m sure you guys see it the same way I do. He’s smiling, he’s having fun, he’s engaging with his teammates, and being the great leader that he is. My message to the fans is just enjoy it.”

“The expectations for myself are always high,” Matthews said. “I try to hold myself to an extremely high standard. It was a frustrating year, last year, of course. But you know, it’s a new season. We’ve had a lot of time to think about it. I’m feeling as good as possible. A new group of guys, a lot of new people, new change, which is inevitable. It’s exciting too, to come to the rink and have that energy, have that excitement again.”

Max Domi, William Villeneuve and Cade Webber are out indefinitely, Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka revealed during Media Day. Domi failed his physical, Villeneuve is undergoing ACL reconstruction, while Webber underwent an elbow reconstruction procedure. Morgan Rielly is also out initially due to what Chayka listed as a ‘viral condition’ that isn’t expected to keep him out of the Maple Leafs’ opening game against the Montreal Canadiens on September 29.
