The Toronto Maple Leafs received a small but encouraging update on William Nylander ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Colorado Avalanche.
Nylander skated prior to Saturday’s practice as he continues to recover from a groin injury, according to TSN’s Mark Masters. Nylander has missed the last four games and remains on injured reserve. His most recent setback came on Jan. 15 against Vegas, when he exited early after aggravating a lower-body issue.
That same injury had already cost him six games earlier in the season. While there is still no firm return date, skating before practice marks progress.
Head coach Craig Berube addressed Nylander’s status following the skate. Berube said he had not yet spoken with trainers or Nylander directly, but wanted to see how the forward felt after getting back on the ice.
"I haven't talked to the trainers yet or him, but we'll see how he felt," Berube said. "Hopefully he can keep getting on the ice here & be ready to go. I can't give you a timeline on that yet"

Before the injury, Nylander was one of Toronto’s most productive players. He posted 17 goals and 31 assists for 48 points in just 37 games, leading the team in scoring. His speed, puck control, and finishing ability have driven offense at both five-on-five and on the power play. Toronto’s recent struggles are evident in his absence.
The Maple Leafs enter Sunday’s game on a three-game losing streak and sit sixth in the Atlantic Division at 24-18-9. While the offense averages more than three goals per game, defensive lapses and injuries have hurt consistency.
Sunday’s matchup presents a tough test. Colorado owns one of the league’s best records and a strong road mark. Toronto previously beat the Avalanche 4-3 in overtime earlier this season and will look to respond at home, with or without Nylander in the lineup.
