With the Toronto Maple Leafs spiraling to a 0–4–1 skid over their last five games and sitting second-last in the Eastern Conference with an overall 8-9-2 record, general manager Brad Treliving stepped in front of reporters Tuesday morning.
Treliving announced his unexpected press conference on Monday, and addressed who's behind the Leafs' issues through the first quarter of the 2025-26 season.
“I take full responsibility,” Treliving said about who's to blame for Toronto's awful campaign to date. “I’m in charge of the hockey department.”
Despite growing calls for accountability after the team’s disappointing start to the year, the Leafs' GM made it clear that no coaching change is imminent.

“I have all the faith in our coach right now,” Treliving said. “We’re not where we want to be, or where we envisioned to be.”
Berube’s status has come under scrutiny in recent days following a stretch in which the Leafs gave up 22 goals and blew multiple third-period leads.
While the Leafs have scored the fifth-most goals (67) through Monday's games, they have also allowed the fourth-most (72) and have the second-worst goals-allowed-per-game average at 3.79.
On Monday, the head coach exploded and responded with a blistering, profanity-laced practice at the team’s facility, per The Athletic.
Berube challenged players on pace, commitment, and execution, calling out star winger William Nylander directly during drills.
The Leafs will host the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. ET. Toronto won't have captain Auston Matthews as he keeps rehabbing his lower-body injury, with the Leafs trying to win a game for the first time since Nov. 5.
