The Toronto Maple Leafs lost star Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights, in what was an expected move. But while the team did expect to lose Marner, the front office now has the task of replacing his production.
After another frustrating playoff exit, the Maple Leafs have been expected to be very active this offseason. But the list of free agent players has quickly dwindled down as teams load up for next season.
However, there is still one big fish on the market that Toronto could go after. And it seems that Toronto could be ready to pounce on making a move.
According to NHL insider Bob McKenzie, the Maple Leafs are among the suitors for free agent Nikolaj Ehlers. In addition to Toronto, the Colorado Avalanche, Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Washington Capitals were mentioned.

Ehlers could be a nice pickup for the Maple Leafs, helping them to replace the production lost by Marner's leaving. The veteran scored 24 goals and 39 assists for the Winnipeg Jets this past season, showing a strong impact on the ice.
Ehlers has scored at least 20 goals in eight of his 10 seasons in the NHL, and could provide a real spark to this Toronto unit. For a team that has been looking to get over the hump in the playoffs, Ehlers could be a nice addition of new energy.
The veteran scored five goals and two assists in eight playoff games for the Jets this postseason. Toronto could be a solid landing spot for Ehlers, and it seems they may be willing to pay up for his services.
