Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares defended teammate William Nylander on Tuesday after head coach Craig Berube publicly challenged him.
Berube called out the winger’s consistency and poor effort attempting shots to start the season following Monday’s 3–2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
Berube was direct after the defeat, saying Nylander needs “more shots,” to “shoot more,” and to “get on the inside more.”
Tavares, who centers Nylander on the second line, backed his teammate’s work ethic and character when asked about the comments ahead of the team’s matchup against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.
️ Despite the slow start to his season, John Tavares says William Nylander’s ability to bounce back and play in Toronto is what makes him who he is, adding that everyone knows what he’s capable of and how well he responds:

“I’ve always said that’s why I think Willy does tremendously well in this market,” Tavares said. “More than anyone, he’ll look at himself in the mirror and know that he can do more and he can play better. He’s obviously one of the best in the league, and we’re very lucky to have him.”
Berube reiterated his stance at Tuesday’s morning skate, emphasizing that while scoring isn’t Toronto’s only issue, Nylander’s game must drive the team’s offense.
“We need him to score goals, right? That is what he does,” Berube said, “but there is more to his game than that. As I said, our guys have to put the puck in the net, but it is not all on Willy. It is on all of the guys we depend on to score goals.”
Nylander has four points (one goal, three assists) in three games, but only three total shots on goal in that span.
Berube said he’s spoken with Nylander about the need for more urgency while also acknowledging the adjustment to new linemates.
“(Conversations with Nylander) are good. He always has good feedback. He sees things that maybe I don’t see,” Berube said. “He talks about where he is at mentally and with his puck touches.
“These guys need the puck in their hands and want to have the puck. Sometimes, they’re not getting it enough, so they’re not feeling like they’re into the game.”
The Maple Leafs have dropped two straight to Detroit and are looking to get back to .500 after a subpar start to the campaign.
“You just stay with it,” Tavares said. “You don’t overthink things or try to do too much. You stick to playing well and put yourself on the right side of it.”
