Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitchell Marner was in headlines on Tuesday for reasons that had nothing to do with the club's recent first-round playoff exit, as he and his fiancée were the victims of a reported carjacking on Monday night.
Marner took to social media on Wednesday to thank members of the Toronto community and Toronto Police Services:

According to Kristen Shilton of ESPN, three suspects allegedly armed with knives and at least one handgun approached Marner and his fiancée as they exited a movie theater in the Etobicoke district of Toronto around 7:45 p.m. local time on Monday. The suspects reportedly fled the scene in Marner's Range Rover, and police are still searching for those individuals.
Neither Marner nor his fiancée was injured.
As noted by ESPN stats, Marner finished the 2021-22 NHL regular season second on the Maple Leafs with 97 points and first among Toronto players with 62 assists across 72 games. The 25-year-old understandably did not speak with reporters during the team's end-of-season media availability on Tuesday.
"Evidence suggests this was a crime of opportunity," Inspector Rich Harris explained, according to Sportsnet. While Toronto police wouldn't confirm the identities of the victims, Harris said the individuals complied with demands made by the suspects.
