Maple Leafs News & Rumours: Bobrovsky, Cowan, Paul, Tanev & Others

The Toronto Maple Leafs had plenty to feel good about after Saturday’s 6-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche. The big performances have already been covered, with William Nylander recording five points (two goals, three assists) and Auston Matthews adding four (two goals, two assists) in the 6-3 win over Colorado.

Maple Leafs newcomer Nick Blankenburg also opened the scoring early in the first period on his first shift in the Blue and White. Rather than revisit those performances in detail, I want to highlight other Maple Leafs who contributed to the win.

Sergei Bobrovsky picked up his first win with his new team, Easton Cowan delivered another game-winning goal, and Nick Paul continued to show signs of a bounce-back season. There was one concern, though. Chris Tanev left the game with an upper-body injury and didn’t return. It’s the sort of news Toronto could do without, particularly with a 36-year-old defenseman whose experience and defensive reliability remain important to the team.

Sergei Bobrovsky Gets His First Win

Bobrovsky made 30 saves in the win over Colorado, earning his first victory as a Maple Leaf. He’s now 1-2-1 with a 2.97 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage through four starts.

Toronto brought in the two-time Vezina Trophy and Stanley Cup winner to help the team take another step toward a championship. Bobrovsky is beginning to settle in, but the Maple Leafs need to give him consistent support if this partnership is going to work. Last night, against a very good team, they did.

Easton Cowan Delivers Another Game-Winner

Cowan scored the deciding goal against Colorado, giving him three points in six games this season. He’s scored in each of his last two games, and two of his three goals have been game-winners.

It’s an encouraging start for the young forward. Cowan is finding ways to make a difference, and his recent production suggests he’s becoming more comfortable in his role. Toronto needs young players to contribute, and he’s giving the coaching staff another reason to trust him.

Nick Paul Shows Signs of a Bounce-Back Season

Paul recorded two assists against Colorado, bringing his season total to four points in six games. After an injury-plagued 2025-26 season in which he managed just 15 points in 51 games, a healthier and more productive Paul should be a welcome addition.

He has also recorded 10 hits already, bringing a physical element to his game. If Paul can provide secondary scoring while contributing defensively and on the second power-play unit, he’ll offer Toronto useful depth throughout the season.

Chris Tanev Leaves With an Upper-Body Injury

Tanev exited Saturday’s game in the first period with an upper-body injury and didn’t return. For now, he’s considered day-to-day, with more information expected from the Maple Leafs.

At 36, Tanev is an important part of Toronto’s defensive structure, so his status bears watching. The team has six healthy defencemen remaining on the roster, but even a short absence could put additional pressure on the blue line.

What’s Next for the Maple Leafs?

Saturday’s win offered a few encouraging signs. Bobrovsky got into the win column, Cowan continued his recent scoring run, and Paul contributed offensively. Those are useful developments for a team looking for more consistent contributions throughout its lineup.

The bigger question is whether Toronto can build on the performance while keeping its defence healthy. Tanev’s injury is worth monitoring, but the early positives are there. The Maple Leafs don’t need everything to fall into place at once. They need players to keep finding their roles, the goaltending to hold up, and the team to turn encouraging individual performances into consistent results.
