Maple Leafs, Oilers Linked to Offseason Owen Tippett Trade

The NHL trade deadline is well in the rear-view mirror now, though that hasn’t stopped chatter around the league regarding moves that didn’t happen, especially those that could resurface again come the offseason.

Despite several marquee names having been scattered throughout trade boards, the Philadelphia Flyers were rather quiet in the end. However, insider David Pagnotta believes the action could pick up this summer, specifically when it comes to winger Owen Tippett.

He recently revealed there was increased trade talk about Tippett in the lead-up to the deadline, before mentioning the Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Maple Leafs as teams to watch in his sweepstakes.

Pagnotta said:

“We talked about this back months ago about Owen Tippett and teams being curious at the time as to what the Flyers want to do with Owen Tippett. His name popped up a bunch the last couple of weeks. I think the Flyers are in a position where they’re willing to listen, but you’ve got to make them an offer that entices them to continue the conversation. And I think there were a couple of scenarios where that occurred, but didn’t progress further. I think there is a possibility that that does progress in the offseason… I look at teams like Boston, and Minny, and Toronto, and a few others, maybe Edmonton. They’re going to look. Maybe other teams that want that top-six, Ottawa. I can see some of these teams kind of circling around Philly with respect to Tippett,”

The 27-year-old Tippett is in year two of the eight-year, $49.6 million extension he signed with the Flyers in 2024, which includes a modified no-trade clause (10-team) beginning in 2026–27. He’s had a solid season in Philadelphia, producing 40 points (22 goals, 18 assists) through 66 games played so far.

While Tippett would make sense for any of the teams mentioned, his speed and goal-scoring ability would be especially beneficial for the Oilers or Maple Leafs.

This season marks his fourth consecutive 20+ goal, 40+ point campaign on a Philadelphia team that has long lacked high-end talent. An opportunity to play in a top six alongside superstars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl or Auston Matthews and William Nylander could bring even more upside out of the former first-round pick (10th overall, 2017).

Philadelphia doesn’t have to move Tippett, but with trade protection soon to follow, GM Danny Brière could be more inclined to make a deal this summer. And if he does, expect Edmonton and Toronto to be among the suitors squarely in the mix.
