Maple Leafs Preparing To Trade Morgan Rielly

Everything is pointing to the end of an era for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Yesterday, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that Morgan Rielly (via his agent J.P. Barry) had given the Maple Leafs four teams in the Western Conference that he would approve a trade to.

Following up on that report, Dreger indicated that the Leafs were closing in on some trades today, but that didn’t necessarily guarantee Rielly would be included. Regardless, it’s evident that Toronto has reached out to Rielly and his agents about potential teams, and it seems both parties are preparing to part ways this summer.

Reilly, 32, is signed through the 2029-30 season with a $7.5MM cap hit. Given how much the salary cap has increased the past two years, and is expected to continue doing so, it’s highly unlikely that the Maple Leafs will have to retain any salary on Rielly’s deal.

It’s challenging to assess his trade market value, especially since it’s well known that Toronto no longer wants him on the team. He’s coming off a pair of disappointing campaigns with the Maple Leafs, but is only two years removed from registering more than 50 assists in 72 games.

Still, it’s important to highlight how poorly Rielly performed during the 2025-26 season. Throughout the past campaign, Rielly scored 11 goals (six at even strength) and 36 points in 78 games with a -18 rating, averaging 21:08 of ice time per game. It was his lowest scoring output since the 2019-20 season, when he scored 27 points in 47 contests.

Additionally, his defensive metrics cratered. His 48.2% CorsiFor was the lowest he has averaged since his sophomore campaign in 2014-15, and his 88.2% on-ice SV% at even strength made for a new career-low. Meanwhile, his 46.2% On-IceGoals rate was the lowest since the 2015-16 season.

However, even considering his step back throughout the 2025-26 season, the Maple Leafs should get some interest in Rielly, especially if his trade list includes the Anaheim Ducks or San Jose Sharks. It’s unlikely that either team would be willing to pay a hefty price for Rielly, but he certainly wouldn’t look out of place on either team’s second pairing. Given that the Ducks are set to lose John Carlson, Jacob Trouba, and Radko Gudas in the next few days, Rielly would make a lot of sense as a veteran blue liner to plug into their top-four.
