Maple Leafs' Rasmus Sandin out 'weeks' with knee injury

The Toronto Maple Leafs did well to acquire veteran defenseman Mark Giordano from the Seattle Kraken roughly 24 hours before Monday's NHL trade deadline considering what they lost during Saturday's 6-3 defeat to the Nashville Predators.

Per Dave McCarthy of the league's website, Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed ahead of the Wednesday's home game against the New Jersey Devils that defenseman Rasmus Sandin will miss more than a handful of games due to the knee injury he suffered Saturday night in Nashville.

"No, other than it's going to be weeks for sure is what I'm told," Keefe said of a timeline for the 22-year-old's return to action. "How many, we are not certain of that."

Before the setback, Sandin tallied five goals and 11 assists across 51 contests this season. Giordano, meanwhile, has six goals and 17 assists in 55 games on the campaign and is expected to make his Toronto debut replacing Sandin and playing alongside Timothy Liljegren on Wednesday.

"He's walking around and doing things in the gym and stuff like that, so he's moving around and that kind of stuff, but it's going to take a little bit of time for it to heal up and get greater clarity on exactly how long," Keefe added about Sandin's condition.

Toronto's final regular-season game is on April 29 against the Boston Bruins. The Maple Leafs and Bruins are tied for third place in the Atlantic Division standings with 83 points, just one point back of the second-place Tampa Bay Lightning.
