According to a team announcement, the Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled forward Miles Wood from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. Toronto acquired Wood a week and a half ago as a salary offset in the Matthew Knies, Kirill Marchenko swap with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Wood, 31, is in the fourth year of a six-year, $15MM ($2.5MM AAV) contract signed with the Colorado Avalanche ahead of the 2023-24 season. While his cap hit isn’t overly high, the contract’s length has already become a burden for a few teams.

Still, after eight years with the New Jersey Devils, Wood’s first year in the Mile High City went reasonably well. Brought in to stabilize Colorado’s bottom six, Wood finished the 2023-24 campaign with nine goals and 26 points in 74 games with a -5 rating, averaging 13:41 of ice time per game.

Unfortunately, injuries took their toll the following year. Wood registered only four goals and eight points in 37 contests throughout the 2024-25 season. After two years of remaining relatively healthy, upper-body and back injuries cost Wood 45 games that season. Given their financial constraints at the time, the Avalanche couldn’t justify keeping Wood on the roster if he wasn’t going to be available.

That summer, Colorado dealt Wood and Charlie Coyle to the Blue Jackets for Gavin Brindley and two draft picks. Still, although he played in more games, injuries continued to saddle Wood in Columbus. He finished the 2025-26 season with eight goals and 14 points in 54 games with a -10 rating.

Regardless of his recent injury history, he’ll be tasked with rounding out the Maple Leafs’ bottom six for now. Given his spot on the depth chart, Toronto will likely shift Brandon Duhaime to the right wing and replace him on the left with Wood. At the very least, Wood gives the Maple Leafs some flexibility with their forward corps on their current three-game road trip. Given that he cleared waivers on September 26th, Toronto can reassign him to AHL Toronto without issue.
