The Colorado Avalanche made their intentions clear from the opening puck drop at Crypto.com Arena. Behind a stellar two-goal performance from Martin Necas, the Avalanche dismantled the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 in their season opener, delivering a message that last season’s first-round playoff exit is firmly in the rearview mirror.

Martin Necas Takes Center Stage in Avalanche Victory

Martin Necas was the catalyst that transformed what started as a grinding, scoreless affair into a Colorado showcase. The Czech forward found the back of the net twice, including a power-play strike that put the game away in the third period. His first goal came off a beautiful setup from Nathan MacKinnon, who wrapped around the net before finding Martin Necas in the slot for the game’s opening tally.

The second goal was pure opportunism. With Kevin Fiala in the penalty box for roughing, Necas took advantage of the extra space and beat Darcy Kuemper far side to extend Colorado’s lead to 4-0. It was a clinical finish from a player who appears ready to take on an expanded role in the Avalanche’s offensive attack.

“Martin showed exactly what he can bring to our team,” said one observer following the game. “He was in the right place at the right time, but more importantly, he finished when the opportunities presented themselves.”

MacKinnon Makes Franchise History

While Martin Necas stole the headlines with his goal-scoring prowess, Nathan MacKinnon was busy etching his name deeper into Avalanche lore. The superstar center recorded two assists, pushing his career point total to 1,016 and surpassing Joe Sakic’s franchise record of 1,015 points since the team relocated to Denver.
MacKinnon’s first assist on Martin Necas’ opening goal was the historic marker, coming in his 871st game compared to Sakic’s 870 games. The milestone was a fitting tribute to MacKinnon’s sustained excellence and his role as the franchise’s cornerstone player.

The achievement carries extra weight considering Sakic’s legendary status in Colorado hockey circles. While Sakic accumulated an additional 626 points during his Quebec Nordiques days, MacKinnon’s record reflects pure Avalanche excellence since the team’s arrival in the Mile High City.

Second-Period Explosion Seals the Deal

The Avalanche’s dominance was most evident during a three-goal second period that completely shifted the game’s momentum. After a tentative first period where both teams seemed to be feeling each other out, Colorado exploded for three unanswered goals that left the Kings scrambling.

Sam Malinski got the ball rolling after Martin Necas’ opener, scooping up a loose puck and firing a shot through traffic that found its way past Kuemper. The goal showcased the depth that makes the Avalanche so dangerous – secondary scoring from unexpected sources.

Artturi Lehkonen capped the second-period surge with a goal that perfectly encapsulated Colorado’s offensive philosophy. Cale Makar, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, made a highlight-reel rush through multiple Kings defenders. Though his initial shot was blocked, Lehkonen was perfectly positioned at the doorstep to clean up the rebound.

Wedgewood Stands Tall in Net

In goal, Scott Wedgewood gave the Avalanche the consistent presence they needed to win the first game of the season. When the Kings came out strong early in the game, the seasoned goalie stopped 24 shots, including multiple high-risk chances.

Wedgewood’s play was especially strong in the first quarter, when Los Angeles created a lot of scoring opportunities. He kept the Kings from getting any early momentum with his ability to handle rebounds fast and track the puck in traffic.

The only blemish on Wedgewood’s night came during a late third-period power play when Kevin Fiala blasted a shot past him to break up the shutout bid. Even then, the goal came during a 5-on-3 advantage after Colorado took consecutive penalties.
