McDavid’s October Was One of the Best Ever

Connor McDavid just completed one of the greatest October months in NHL history. His start to the 2026/27 season has “You needed to see it to believe it,” vibes.

He broke a few NHL records and set a new standard for a few Edmonton Oilers franchise records.

NHL records:

— McDavid set the NHL record with a 14-game assist streak to start the season. Wayne Gretzky (1982-83), Ken Linseman (1985-86) and Sebastian Aho (2018-19) held the previous record of 12 games. He can extend that streak to 15 games tonight against the New York Rangers.

— He set the record for most assists in October with 27. Gretzky (1986) and Mario Lemieux (1988) held the previous record with 22 assists. McDavid just crushed it and set a new standard that will be difficult to break. His 35 points in October were the third most behind Lemieux’s 38 (1988), 36 (1992) and ahead of Gretzky’s 33 (1986) and Pat LaFontaine’s 30 in 1992.

Here are the top five scorers (including ties) in every other month of the regular season:

November:

PLAYER TEAM SEASON GP G A P
Gretzky Edmonton 1983-84 14 17 32 49
Gretzky Edmonton 1984-85 14 13 25 38
Gretzky Edmonton 1981-82 13 18 19 37
Jari Kurri Edmonton 1983-84 14 16 20 36
Gretzky Edmonton 1982-83 13 12 23 35

Oilers fans were incredibly spoiled.

December:

PLAYER TEAM SEASON GP G A P
Gretzky Edmonton 1985-86 14 8 36 44
Gretzky Edmonton 1981-82 14 19 25 44
Lemieux Pittsburgh 1988-89 14 19 24 43
Gretzky Edmonton 1984-85 12 16 24 40
Lemieux Pittsburgh 1991-92 14 11 26 37
Gretzky Edmonton 1983-84 13 12 25 37

The only month in which a player eclipsed 40-plus points on four different occasions.

January:

PLAYER TEAM SEASON GP G A P
Gretzky Edmonton 1985-86 15 12 31 43
Gretzky Edmonton 1983-84 13 19 21 40
Gretzky Edmonton 1981-82 15 17 21 38
Gretzky Edmonton 1984-85 15 13 24 37
LaFontaine Buffalo 1991-92 14 19 17 36
Gretzky Edmonton 1982-83 15 14 22 36

LaFontaine is the only player other than Gretzky and Lemieux to be top five in two different months.

February:

PLAYER TEAM SEASON GP G A P
Gretzky Edmonton 1981-82 11 15 20 35
Mike Bossy NY Islanders 1981-82 14 11 23 34
Gretzky Edmonton 1985-86 11 7 26 33
Bryan Trottier NY Islanders 1981-82 14 17 15 32
Luc Robitaille Los Angeles 1991-92 15 16 15 31
Lemieux Pittsburgh 1985-86 12 13 18 31

Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier were a fun duo, and it’s interesting that Trottier was the goal scorer in February 1982, with 17 goals in 14 games.

March:

PLAYER TEAM SEASON GP G A P
Gretzky Edmonton 1987-88 14 5 33 38
Lemieux Pittsburgh 1992-93 13 18 19 37
Gretzky Edmonton 1985-86 14 6 31 37
Lemieux Pittsburgh 1991-92 13 12 24 36
Lemieux Pittsburgh 1987-88 14 11 25 36
Gretzky Edmonton 1982-83 13 15 21 36

Not much debate on who the two greatest offensive players in NHL history were.

April:

PLAYER TEAM SEASON GP G A P
Steven Stamkos Tampa Bay 2021-22 16 12 21 33
Nikita Kucherov Tampa Bay 2021-22 16 14 17 31
Pavel Buchnevich St. Louis 2021-22 16 9 16 25
Kirill Kaprizov Minnesota 2021-22 16 9 16 25
Johnny Gaudreau Calgary 2021-22 15 9 15 24

Gretzky and Lemieux never had many games in April. There was a six-way tie for fifth place, but Johnny Gaudreau had played the fewest games, so I chose him for this list. McDavid did have 23 points in 2021-22 in 13 games, and he had 21 points in 11 games in 2020-21.

In November, December and January of 1985-86, Gretzky combined to score 120 points in 40 games, and that’s why anytime McDavid breaks one of his records, it should be appreciated for how difficult it was to break.

OILERS RECORDS…

— McDavid broke Gretzky’s record for most points in the first 10 games of the season. Gretzky had 30 points in 1983/84, while McDavid scored five points in his 10th game to reach 31 through his first 10. McDavid’s previous best start was 22 points in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

— Gretzky held the Oilers franchise mark for most points in October with 33. McDavid broke that with two points against Calgary on Oct. 28 and increased it to 35 with his assist on Halloween.

— McDavid Gretzky’s assist record in October. Gretzky had 22 assists in 1986, and McDavid finished October with 27. As noted, he now holds the NHL record for most assists in October.

Breaking three Oilers records, all previously owned by Gretzky, illustrates how incredible McDavid was in October. Enjoy it. Don’t overlook what you are watching, because a dominant stretch like this is rare.

In 2022-23 when McDavid scored 153 points, he had 14-15-29 in his first 14 games. He is currently eight points ahead of that pace with 37 points through 14 games this year. And in the shortened 2021 season when McDavid finished with 105 points in 56 games (which prorates to 153 over 82 games), he had 27 points in his first 14 games.

He’s crushing his previous best starts.

OTHER OILERS HAVING GREAT STARTS…

— For the third time in his career, Leon Draisaitl has 26-plus points in his first 14 games. Draisaitl had 15-16-31 in 2021-22, produced 9-17-26 in 2022-23, and he’s off to another great start with 12-14-26 this season.

— Evan Bouchard leads all defensemen in goals (seven), assists (16) and points (23). He also leads with a plus-20 rating. He is plus-19 at 5×5 (26-7), and no other defenseman in the NHL has been on the ice for more than 19 goals for.

— Tristan Jarry allowed six goals on September 29th against Vancouver, but in October he was one of the top goalies in the NHL.

Via The Nation Network

He ranks sixth in save percentage and seventh in goals-against average. Devon Levi’s last six starts, before being injured, he posted a .913 Sv% and 2.47 GAA. The Oilers’ overall team defence has improved, and they’ve reduced odd-man rush chances and slot shots, but when they have given up quality chances, the goalies have been good, and Jarry has been great after posting consecutive 4-0 shutout victories.

Jarry is the fifth Oilers goalie to post back-to-back shutouts in the regular season. Curtis Joseph did it twice in the 1997-98 season, while Tommy Salo (2000/01), Dwayne Roloson (2006/07), Cam Talbot (2016/2017) and Mike Smith (2021/22) did it once.

No Oiler goalie has posted three consecutive shutouts.

— The Oilers are 10-2-2 and have won 10 of their first 15 games for the sixth time in franchise history. Here are the best starts after 15 games in franchise history.

1984-85: 12-0-3 and 27 points.
1983-84: 12-2-1 and 25 points.
1985-86: 11-3-1 and 23 points.
2019-20: 11-4 and 22 points.
2021-22: 10-4-1 and 21 points.

If the Oilers win tonight, they will improve to 11-2-2 and have the third-best start in franchise history with 24 points in 15 games.
