The Dallas Stars were hoping that the arrival of Mikko Rantanen would bring stability after a hectic year of trade rumours, contract drama, and major roster changes.
But just weeks before his first full season in Dallas, the Finnish forward is in the spotlight for reasons that have nothing to do with hockey.
According to Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, Rantanen is facing a fine that could reach nearly $100,000 USD for an alle ged unauthorized absence from mandatory military service.
It is a situation that risks overshadowing what should be a smooth start to his 10th NHL season.
In Finland, men between the ages of 18 and 28 must complete at least six months of military service.
Unlike Roope Hintz, who postponed his service last year due to injury, Rantanen is accused of missing his April 15, 2024 reporting date before filing a postponement request one day late.
The prosecutor in the case claims that even a single day counts as an absence, and because Rantanen earns about 339,000 euros per month after taxes, the fine could reach up to 85,000 euros.
"Rantanen was ordered to arrive for training, but did not show and opted to file for a postponement to his service, which was done after his deadline but was approved," reported Helsingin Sanomat.
As Hockey Patrol notes, this is not unusual for Finnish athletes, but few can avoid eventual service unless health exemptions apply.
Nico Hischier and Olli Määttä both handled their obligations earlier in their careers.
This matter even has ripple effects beyond Dallas. The Toronto Maple Leafs could soon face a similar situation with Finnish forward Matias Maccelli, who is still within the service age window.
Rantanen, however, is no ordinary player. He is a two-time 100-point scorer, an Olympic selection for Finland, and someone expected to push Dallas closer to a Stanley Cup. The Stars desperately want his focus on the ice, not in a courtroom.
I believe this could be a distraction, but it might also become a rallying point for him to prove his dedication once the season begins.
